The former head of Vologda, ex-deputy of the State Duma and ex-deputy of the Vologda Legislative Assembly Evgeny Shulepov, accused of corruption, died in the regional clinical hospital where he was undergoing treatment. This was announced on September 18 by the press service of the regional department of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN).

"On September 17th, the accused E. B. Shulepov died in the Vologda Regional Clinical Hospital, where he was undergoing long-term treatment for a chronic illness. The information that he died in jail is not true," the report says.

Why was the sentence for fraud and bribery twice as lenient as the prosecutor demanded?

On May 13, Shulepov was suspected of abuse of authority and bribery. According to investigators, in the period 2008-2016, the head of the municipality implemented programs for the resettlement of citizens from dilapidated housing stock in violation of the rights and legitimate interests of persons living in premises deemed unsuitable for habitation.

On May 23, the Vologda Region Prosecutor's office reported that Shulepov had received more than 11.3 million rubles in bribes from construction companies. On September 17, Elena, Shulepov's daughter, announced his death.
