- Axios reported on the plans of the Syrian Foreign Minister to visit the United States for the first time in 25 years
Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs under the Transitional government, Asaad al-Sheibani, will visit the United States on Thursday, September 18, to negotiate the lifting of the remaining US sanctions. This was reported on the same day by the Axios portal, citing sources.
"Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani will visit Washington on Thursday for talks on Capitol Hill on the indefinite lifting of the remaining sanctions against Syria," the publication says.
It is noted that this will be the first visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister to the United States in more than 25 years.
Earlier, on August 25, the US Treasury Department published the final decision on the lifting of sanctions against Syria. It is specified that the relevant measure was taken in connection with the lifting of the state of emergency in the state on which the rules were based. This is also due to further changes in US policy towards Syria.
On July 31, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the West's lifting of sanctions against Syria a move in the right direction. Among other things, he noted that Russia stands for the complete lifting of the restrictions imposed on the Syrian state.
On June 30, US President Donald Trump signed a decree on the lifting of sanctions against Syria from July 1. The decision was made in order to support the State's path to stability and peace. The decree also allowed the easing of export controls on certain goods and lifted restrictions on the provision of foreign aid to Syria.
