The expert spoke about the consequences of increased recycling
The new initiative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade will lead to higher prices, as recycling, according to the new rules, will increase significantly for most imported cars. Tatyana Akimova, General Director of the Automarketologist company, told Izvestia about this on September 17.
"The new initiative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade will obviously lead to higher prices, as recycling, according to the new rules, will increase significantly for most imported cars. Moreover, it will primarily affect "people's" cars — mid—size crossovers, whose power is higher than the preferential 160 hp," Akimova said.
According to her, a short surge in sales on the eve of an increase in recycling will subsequently be replaced by a decline, primarily in the affordable machinery sector. She added that powerful electric cars and hybrids will also rise sharply in price, and the formula "little money for a lot of power" that is fair for them will stop working.
The expert noted that the demand for expensive car models is unlikely to change against this background: it is not difficult for such buyers to pay a million more, they will continue to buy what they need.
Akimova explained that the new recycling facility leaves allowances for individuals when purchasing cars with a capacity of up to 160 hp, but there are quite a few such imported models. Against this background, buyers will have to look for an alternative among cars that have already been cleared according to the old rules, so it is natural for prices to rise for cars that have already been imported, Tatiana said.
According to her, by the end of the year, the price increase will surely have time to affect all sectors of the automotive market.
"Against the background of the expected price increase, the turnover of used cars has increased, customers make purchase decisions faster. As for used European foreign cars, they have a very loyal audience," the expert noted.
Summing up, Akimova said that many potential buyers will switch to cars that have passed customs clearance, including after the first owners in Russia, that is, they will look for a more affordable alternative. The rest of the majority will have to save money and wait for a further reduction in the Central Bank's rate to a comfortable 13-14%, the expert added. Also, in her opinion, it is possible to revise the values of recycling if the market responds with a sharp drop.
"Something similar was already attempted in the mid-2010s, when Western brands massively built factories in Russia. It is possible that the number of new Russian brands localizing Chinese cars in factories in the Russian Federation will exceed all market demands. A vivid example is Tenet. And this is just the beginning," Akimova concluded.
Earlier in the day, State Duma deputy Nikolai Arefyev said that a new recycling fee for passenger cars imported into Russia could accelerate inflation. According to Arefyev, the question is now being discussed whether it is worth raising recycling so sharply, since this may not only not have the expected effect, but also lead to a reduction in tax revenues.
