Biotech startup Colossal Biosciences Inc., working on the resurrection of extinct animals, has raised $120 million from investors including New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson, and its chief executive officer says the company expects to revive the dodo in less than seven years.
The company said it has taken a big step in bird science by growing a pigeon cage in a laboratory, which opens the door to "new ways to protect endangered birds and possibly bring back extinct ones," including the dodo.
According to Ben Lamm, the company's chief executive officer, the new cash injections, which will bring the total amount of funding for Colossal to $555 million, will partially go towards the construction of a bird research center in Texas.
In April, American entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk called for the creation of a "pet mammoth", after the United States was able to bring back the so-called terrible wolves, or direwolves, which became extinct more than 12 thousand years ago. It was clarified that the technology developed by the company could potentially help preserve species that have not yet become extinct, such as the endangered red wolves, whose range is mainly limited to the American state of North Carolina.
