- A special national holiday on September 19th is the Mikhailovo Miracle: history, traditions, omens
Every year on September 19, Orthodox believers honor the memory of Archangel Michael, the leader of the heavenly host and defender of righteous souls. In the national calendar, the holiday is called St. Michael's Miracle or St. Michael's Day and symbolizes the victory of good over evil, spiritual purification. In 2025, it falls on a Friday. Read about its origin, meaning, traditions and folk signs in the Izvestia article.
What is the church holiday on September 19th?
In Christian teaching, the spiritual world is inhabited by intelligent, kind beings — angels, whose mission is to fulfill the will of God. The word "angel" in Greek means "messenger", and the prefix "archi" indicates a higher level. Michael holds a special place among the archangels — his name translates as "Who is like God?".
The sacred texts call Michael the commander of the heavenly host, a fighter against the devil and a defender of the people of God. His involvement in biblical events makes him one of the most revered in the Orthodox tradition. On the icons, Archangel Michael is depicted with a spear or sword, overthrowing the devil.
On September 19, the Orthodox Church commemorates the St. Michael's Miracle that occurred in the city of Khona (Colossus) in Asia Minor. According to legend, a pious Christian named Archippus had a daughter who could not speak since childhood. One day the Archangel Michael appeared to him in a dream and showed him the way to a spring with healing water. The girl, after drinking the water, found her voice.
In gratitude, Archippus was baptized and built a temple in honor of the Archangel on this site. Later, local pagans, dissatisfied with the spread of Christianity, tried to destroy it. They connected the channels of two rivers and directed the streams to the shrine. Then Archippus turned to Michael again with prayer. He intervened by pushing the mountain apart and directing the waters into the resulting gorge. The building remained unscathed. This event has become one of the most important in the church tradition, symbolizing salvation, spiritual fortitude and the power of faith.
Traditions of the national holiday Mikhailovo miracle on September 19th
In Russia, it was customary to spend the morning of Michaelmas in the temple. Believers went to prayer services, during which they asked Archangel Michael for the purification of the soul, healing from ailments, protection from evil people, temptations and injustice. We turned to him for help before the trip.
After the service, the villages hosted autumn bratchins, large feasts with the participation of the entire community. Each family brought food — meat, fish, vegetables, pastries made from the flour of the new harvest. The housewives prepared jelly, rolls, cabbage rolls, pies with meat, fish and mushroom fillings. The ancestors believed that the richer the food, the more generous the next year would be.
The holiday was a time of reconciliation and fun. People reconciled with those with whom they were in a quarrel, treated travelers and the poor, sang songs, led round dances. People used to say, "Whoever holds a grudge against Mikhail will never see good." The youth used the day for dating and matchmaking.
What not to do on the Mikhailovo Miracle holiday on September 19th
Michaelmas was perceived as spiritually significant, requiring special reverence. The ancestors carefully watched their words and behavior, trying to prevent actions that could offend the memory of Archangel Michael and disrupt the atmosphere of reverence. One should not immerse oneself in everyday household chores or engage in heavy physical labor — this was considered disrespectful to the Archangel. There was even a cautionary saying in Russia: "You can't work for Mikhail — God will punish you."
What else you can't do on September 19th:
- Offending the weak (children, women, and the elderly) is a punishment that can make you seriously ill.;

- Throwing away half—eaten food should have been given to those in need, so as not to starve the family.;
- washing your hair can make you stupid, "wash off" your whole mind;
- drinking alcohol — such libations can cause trouble.
