More than 62% of Russians over the age of 18 are overweight. This is becoming a serious problem, as excess weight not only affects appearance, but also significantly increases the risk of developing various diseases, including type 2 diabetes. On September 19, Anna Marchenko, MD, endocrinologist, chief physician of the Dr. ANNA family clinic, told Izvestia about the relationship between overweight and diabetes.

"Adipose tissue contributes to the development of insulin resistance, that is, it disrupts the sensitivity of insulin to glucose, which prevents it from being absorbed from the blood into organs and tissues. This leads to excessive insulin production by the pancreas," the specialist said.

Marchenko said that overweight affects the functioning of many organs and systems, especially vision, kidneys and blood vessels. However, according to the doctor, if you reduce weight in time, you can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Insulin sensitivity recovers quickly as soon as a person begins to lose body weight. This helps to normalize blood glucose levels and prevent diabetes.

"It's not difficult to determine the presence of extra pounds on your own. There is a body mass index (BMI) for this. It can be calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. If the indicator is in the range from 18 to 24.9, then your weight is normal, from 25 to 29.9 is overweight, if more than 30 is obese. You should seriously engage in weight loss if the indicator is more than 27," the doctor clarified.

She drew attention to the fact that short-term diets are not an effective solution, as it is stressful for the body. The best approach is to change your lifestyle, including reducing calories, increasing physical activity, and normalizing your work and rest schedule.

If you cannot cope with excess weight on your own, Marchenko recommended contacting a specialist. Today, there are various techniques, including medications, that will help to normalize body weight and maintain health.

On September 10, general practitioner, cardiologist and nutritionist Philip Kuzmenko spoke about the main problem that prevents weight loss. In 70% of cases, after trying to lose weight, people gain even more weight than they initially did. A person begins to eat right and count calories, but after reaching the goal relaxes, and the weight gradually returns.
