Police in Utah have arrested 71-year-old George Zinn on charges of obstruction of justice after the murder of Charlie Kirk, executive director of Turning Point USA at Utah Valley University. This was reported on September 16 by The Guardian newspaper.

According to police, Zinn made a false confession to distract attention from the real killer.

"I'm glad I said I shot the man so the real suspect could get away," Zinn said after the arrest.

He was also detained for having images of child sexual abuse on his phone.

The deputy sheriff noted that "Zinn tried to interfere in the investigation by providing false information, which complicated the work of law enforcement officers and diverted attention from the real criminal."

The court decided to keep Zinn in custody without the possibility of bail. The investigation is ongoing.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that Tyler Robinson was officially charged with serious murder, intentionally or knowingly causing death in circumstances that pose a significant risk of death to others. Utah State Attorney Jeffrey Gray noted that he will file a notice of intent to seek the death penalty and treats this decision with all seriousness.
