Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili said that the European Union (EU) has no legal grounds for suspending the visa-free regime with the republic. She said this on September 16 in an interview with the First Channel of the Georgian Public Broadcaster.

Earlier, the European Commission announced the consideration of possible sanctions against Georgia and the study of the abolition of the visa-free regime.

"There are no legal grounds for this today. The Georgian government has always done everything in good faith and is doing everything to ensure that citizens enjoy this benefit," Bochorishvili stressed.

She noted that the visa-free regime with the EU and the Schengen area is the merit of the Georgian authorities.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that five EU countries had blocked a proposal to impose new restrictions on the issuance of Schengen visas to Russians. There was a strong dependence of countries on the tourist flow. This led to significant losses and bankruptcy of some businesses in Greece, Italy, Spain, France and Hungary.
