- Fugitive MP Gadzhiev was accused in Ukraine of the attempted assassination of Panovsky
Ukrainian neo-Nazi Todor Panovsky, convicted in absentia in Russia in the case of the attack on the Russian consulate in Odessa, said that an attempt was made on his life in the summer. During a press conference for journalists, he stated that the former State Duma deputy Magomed Gadzhiev, who was recognized as a foreign agent in Russia and fled the country, was behind his organization.
According to him, the incident occurred on August 20, on the eve of the court hearing in Gadzhiyev's case - the Kiev regional Prosecutor's office accuses the ex-deputy under Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine ("Encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of the state"). Panovsky was contacted by phone by a man who identified himself as an employee of the Ukrainian security forces and offered a meeting. He decided to check the information and contacted this structure, after which it turned out that the person with that name did not work there. The Security Service of Ukraine got involved in the case, and during the scheduled meeting, the attacker was detained, Lenta reported on November 5. Criminal proceedings have been opened on the attempted murder.
Gadzhiev's case in Ukraine has been dragging on since 2014. Then the deputy came under Ukrainian sanctions for supporting the reunification of Crimea with Russia. Later, in December 2023, the State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine declared him an official suspect under Article 110 of the Criminal Code, which provides for up to five years in prison with confiscation of property. The next court session was held on October 29. During it, the former MP's lawyers insisted that their client had become a victim of the regime. In addition, lawyers claim that Hajiyev is now actively cooperating with European, Ukrainian and American intelligence services, and he is in danger at home.
In Russia, the former parliamentarian was put on the wanted list in the spring of 2024 in the case of the murder of the rector of the Institute of Theology and International Relations Maksud Sadikov. The investigation considers the ex-deputy the organizer of this crime. A year earlier, the Ministry of Justice added the fugitive deputy to the register of foreign agents on the grounds that he, "being outside the Russian Federation, expressed his willingness to cooperate with foreign sources in order to obtain foreign citizenship" and declared the support of the Ukrainian authorities.
In August of this year, it became known about the statement of claim of the Prosecutor General's Office, according to which Gadzhiev handed over confidential information to the West for $ 45 million. In addition, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation filed a lawsuit to seize real estate from Gadzhiev with a total value of more than 2 billion rubles and demanded that the group created by family members of the former deputy be recognized as an extremist association.
The Polish publication GEO Polityka wrote in November last year that Gadzhiev keeps millions of dollars in the American Wells Fargo Bank. It was reported that the bank considered the possibility of closing the accounts of the fugitive MP, but did not do so at the request of the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which motivated this by the fact that Hajiyev provided the agency with some sensitive information.
