- The political scientist pointed out the difficulties of adopting the 19th package of sanctions against Russia in the EU.
Brussels is seeking to include in the 19th package of sanctions against Russia an almost complete ban on the purchase of Russian hydrocarbons by EU member states, but a number of states, including Hungary and Slovakia, oppose such drastic measures. Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, Professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, told Izvestia on September 16.
"The 19th package of sanctions will be adopted sooner or later, but its specific content is the subject of intense discussions. The West has already exhausted the list of restrictions it can take against Russia without causing significant damage to itself. Each new package of sanctions is another shot in the foot for European economic well—being," the expert said.
In addition, the possibility of a complete cessation or severe restrictions on the issuance of Schengen visas to Russians is being actively discussed on the sidelines of EU government bodies. The political scientist said that for countries such as Italy, France and Spain, this decision could result in serious losses.
He also drew attention to the pressure exerted by US President Donald Trump on the European Union, urging it to set an example in the issue of sanctions pressure on Russia. According to him, in this regard, European leaders will have to consult with Washington on this issue.
"All this delays the final decision—making process," explained Feldman.
On the same day, it was reported that the permanent representatives of the EU member states had removed the discussion of new restrictions on Moscow from the agenda. Previously, this item was included in the list of topics for discussion under the remark "maybe".
On August 29, the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, called on EU countries to impose secondary sanctions against oil supplies from Russia, which will be similar to restrictions imposed by the United States. On September 12, it was reported that the European Union was finalizing work on the 19th package of sanctions against Russia. According to Callas, additional measures will be considered regarding the supply of Russian oil, tankers of the "shadow" fleet and banks.
