- Iran and five other countries have submitted a resolution banning attacks on nuclear facilities.
Iran, together with Russia, China, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus, submitted a draft resolution "On the prohibition of all forms of attacks on nuclear facilities and installations under IAEA safeguards." This was announced on September 16 by the representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmail Bagai.
"In order to protect the integrity of the NPT, Iran, together with China, Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus, submitted a draft resolution on the prohibition of all forms of attacks and threats of attacks on nuclear facilities and infrastructure that fall under IAEA safeguards," he wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Within the framework of the document, all States must refrain from attacks or threats of attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities in other countries.
In addition, all countries can enjoy the "inalienable right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes" and "have the right to effective guarantees against any attack."
The day before, US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said that Iran's nuclear program, including all uranium enrichment facilities, should be completely shut down. In his opinion, the country should cooperate with the IAEA and comply with its obligations under safety guarantees.
Earlier, on September 8, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that the full resumption of agency inspections in Iran would reduce the likelihood of military strikes on the country's nuclear facilities. According to him, if the IAEA starts conducting inspections in Iran, it will help reduce the risks of military action.
