Lula will address the UN General Assembly calling for recognition of Palestine
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will address the opening of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York on September 23. In his speech, he intends to address issues of Palestine, democracy and the climate crisis, the AgenciaBrasil newspaper reported on September 15.
According to Marcelo Marotta Viegas, director of the Department of International Organizations at the Foreign Ministry, "sustainable peace can be achieved in the region only if both sides are able to negotiate on equal terms, including the state potential of Palestine."
The official added that the Brazilian government hopes that the moment of the President's speech "will serve as an opportunity for more countries to recognize Palestine as a state."
Earlier, on September 13, it was reported that the UN General Assembly supported the creation of Palestine without the Hamas movement. During the voting, the proposal was supported by 142 countries, as well as Ukraine. 10 states opposed it, including the United States, Israel, Hungary and Argentina. 12 countries abstained from voting.
