Netanyahu refused to acknowledge the failure of Israel's strikes on Qatar
The Israeli leadership continues to find out what led to the attacks by the country's military on Qatar, which initially aimed to eliminate the top leadership of the Palestinian Hamas movement. This was announced on September 15 by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"We are still collecting final reports," Netanyahu said at a joint press conference with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who arrived in Israel.
At the same time, Netanyahu refused to recognize the operation in Doha as unsuccessful. He noted that the main result of the attack in any case is to send a signal to all opponents of Israel that they will have nowhere to hide from retaliation.
"I'll tell you what the consequences of the blow are. We have sent a message to the terrorists.: "You can run, but you can't hide, we'll get to you." <...> Terrorists think that they enjoy immunity, and then they will carry out terrorist attacks over and over again. And if they are denied this immunity, they will think twice," Haaretz newspaper quoted the Prime Minister as saying.
A Hamas negotiating delegation that arrived in Doha, the capital of Qatar, to discuss a plan proposed by the United States for a cease—fire in the Gaza Strip, was attacked on September 9. On the same day, White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt announced attempts by US President Donald Trump to warn Qatar about the impending strikes, which were undertaken too late. United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the Israeli strikes, calling them a blatant violation of Qatar's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Netanyahu said on September 13 that the Hamas leaders in Qatar were deliberately prolonging the conflict and called for their elimination. The Prime Minister added that representatives of the Palestinian movement had blocked all attempts at a cease-fire in order to prolong the conflict and did not care about the residents of Gaza. On September 14, Trump called on Israel to exercise maximum caution in its actions directed towards Qatar.
