Likhachev declared a renaissance for nuclear energy in the world

Nuclear energy in the world is experiencing a renaissance, Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation, said on September 15 during a conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

"Nuclear energy in the world is experiencing a renaissance. According to the IAEA forecast, the installed capacity of nuclear power plants in the world will more than double by 2050," TASS quoted him as saying.

He noted that Russia will always support the IAEA, which is especially important given the challenges of modern realities. According to Likhachev, Rosatom will have to double the number of nuclear power plants operating in Russia, according to the task set by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The President of the Russian Federation has set a task in 20 years in our country to increase the share of electricity generation at nuclear power plants from the current almost 20% to 25%. In accordance with the general scheme of energy capacity allocation, we have been instructed to build 38 large, medium and low-power nuclear power units in Russia. To more than double the fleet of operating nuclear power plants," explained the head of the corporation.

Currently, according to Russian technologies, nuclear power plants are being built in nine countries, 24 high-capacity units are under active implementation.

The head of Rosatom stressed that a number of tasks will have to be solved in the coming decades, including the cost of borrowed money, since from 2028-2029 the state corporation will have to increase borrowing to finance the construction of nuclear power plants.
