The European Union (EU) has cut purchases of Russian oil by a third compared to July last year. This became known on September 15 from the data of Eurostat, which was reviewed by the RIA Novosti news agency.

According to these data, in July 2025, the EU purchased €318.8 million worth of Russian oil. The volume of purchases amounted to 5.7 million barrels. These figures are 35% less than in the same period last year, but 4.5% more than in June of this year, clarifies Газета.ги .

From January to July 2025, the European Union purchased 48.2 million barrels of Russian oil worth €2.9 billion. This is 1.3 times less than a year ago.

Hungary and Slovakia have become the main consumers of Russian oil. Hungary purchased 3.1 million barrels worth €169.5 million. Slovakia's imports of Russian oil amounted to 2.7 million barrels worth €149.3 million.

On September 13, US President Donald Trump announced his readiness to impose serious sanctions against Russia when NATO countries stop buying Russian oil. On September 14, The Washington Post called Trump's calls to stop importing oil from Russia an attempt to postpone the process of adopting a new package of sanctions against Moscow. On September 15, Trump said that the EU's anti-Russian sanctions were ineffective, as EU countries continued to purchase Russian oil.
