Rare moss from the Red Book discovered in Sochi
A rare moss, Cryphaea heteromalla, has been discovered in the Krasnodar Territory. The Red Book plant has settled on catalpa trunks in the Southern Cultures Park of the Caucasian Nature Reserve in Sochi, the press service of the institution reports.
This endemic of the Western Palearctic has been under state protection for many years. The representative of the flora is extremely rare on the continent and is listed in the Red List of European countries.
The vulture was first discovered in Russia in 1957 in the same park on the trunk of a cypress tree. Then the plant was encountered in 2002 and 2007. This time, unique moss was found on catalpa trunks at a height of 60-150 cm.
Scientists believe that this species is sensitive to air pollution. That is, the discovery of a vulture indicates a favorable environmental situation in the growing region.
According to KrasnodarMedia news agency, the find is especially important in connection with the preparation of the next edition of the Red Book of the Krasnodar Territory, scheduled for 2027.
