At the Tokyo Athletics tournament, for the first time in history, a photo finish revealed the winner of the marathon. This was announced on September 15 on the website of the International Association of Athletics Federations World Athletics.

World champion Alphonse Felix Simbu from Tanzania beat silver medalist Amanal Petros by a minimal margin, despite the fact that Petros led almost the entire race. Both athletes covered the distance of 42.195 km with a time of 2:09.48, while the bronze medalist Iliass Aouani from Italy finished with a time of 2:09.53.

The photo finish showed a gap of only 0.03 seconds between Simbu and Petros, which was the smallest difference between the champion and the medalist at the World Championships in Tokyo.

Earlier, on April 18, South African runner Akani Simbine broke the record of Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt. It was clarified that the runner ran 100 m at the Gold Grand Prix in Botswana. The athlete surpassed the result of eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt.
