On September 15, as part of the joint Russian-Belarusian strategic exercises Zapad-2025, the Northern Fleet's anti-submarine aviation conducted an exercise to search for and destroy a simulated enemy nuclear submarine in the Barents Sea. This was reported in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

"The large-scale anti-submarine event involved Tu-142 and Il—38 long-range anti-submarine aircraft, as well as Ka-27M naval anti-submarine helicopters," the report says.

It is noted that at this stage of the exercise, Tu-142 and Il-38 aircraft also dropped sonar buoys at a given range, after which Ka-27M helicopters carried out further tracking of the target at the transmitted coordinates. Then the crews of the aircraft carried out an attack, dropping practical bombs on the course of the "enemy" submarine, which forced its crew to surface.

As part of the Zapad-2025 exercise, elements of the protection of coastal facilities and garrisons of the Northern Fleet, the management of diverse groups of forces in areas of responsibility, as well as the integrated use of high-precision weapons, advanced and modern weapons and military equipment are being worked out. In addition, the forces of the Northern Fleet operate in the Arctic Sea zone, the Ministry of Defense added.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that crews of long-range supersonic Tu-22M3 missile bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces had completed combat training missions over the neutral waters of the Barents Sea as part of the Zapad-2025 exercises.
