The Ukrainian government deliberately hides data on the number of casualties of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was announced on September 15 by a former Ukrainian soldier who defected to Russia, a fighter from Alexander Matrosov's detachment with the call sign Mavik.

"The authorities are silent about the real figure of military losses. They're really keeping quiet, not talking. As they say, there is no body, there is no case. <… > They are silent a lot, they don't say a lot of things," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to the soldier, if there is a soldier's body, the government needs to pay a monetary allowance to the family of the deceased, but the authorities deliberately do not provide data on deaths in order to reduce payments.

On September 7, Le Figaro newspaper stated that there is a critical shortage of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel in the territory of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) due to the lack of infantry and a defensive line.

On August 21, Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, spoke about the risk of increased losses in the Armed Forces due to a reduction in American aid. He also concluded that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will continue to experience a shortage of resources until the end of the conflict.
