Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lulu da Silva has written an open essay to start a frank dialogue with US President Donald Trump. The essay was published on September 14 by The New York Times (NYT).

"I decided to write this essay to start an open and frank dialogue with the President of the United States. Over decades of negotiations <...> I've learned to listen to all sides and consider all the interests at stake. That is why I have carefully studied the arguments put forward by the Trump administration about imposing a 50% tariff on Brazilian products," Lulu da Silva said.

He stressed that the imposition of such duties on goods from Brazil is a mistaken and illogical act. He noted that such a decision has no economic justification, therefore, the motivation for this step is political.

Lulu da Silva said Brazil is still ready for open talks with Trump for mutually beneficial cooperation. However, Brazil's democracy and sovereignty cannot be discussed.

On September 12, former Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for attempting a coup against the current leader of the country, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. On the same day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States would take retaliatory measures in response to Bolsonaro's sentence. Later, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry responded to Rubio's threats, saying that such words would not intimidate the country.
