- The media reported on the public conflict between Stubb and Johnson at a conference in Kiev.
A verbal conflict took place between Finnish President Alexander Stubb and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kiev. This was reported by the Iltalehti newspaper on September 13.
It is clarified that the disagreement began during discussions on the provision of security guarantees for Kiev, when Stubb told the former prime minister that Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) would be the best guarantee.
According to the publication, Johnson took this as a personal insult, since it was he who was one of the initiators of Britain's exit from the EU, and hinted at the slowness and inaction of the Finnish president.
In addition, the former prime minister asked the speaker Stubb about frozen Russian assets worth €300 billion that could help Ukraine. The Finnish President agreed that the funds should be used for reconstruction or reparations, but noted the concern of some EU countries due to the legal consequences.
Johnson also expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the "coalition of the willing," asking why the member countries of the alliance do not send their troops to the territory of Ukraine. In his opinion, this would actually give Russia the "right of veto" in this matter.
Stubb announced on September 11 that over the past week he had spent more time with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky than with his own wife. It was clarified that he communicated with the Ukrainian leader almost daily.
