The reason for frequent illnesses in autumn is a violation of the protective function of the human mucosa, which acts as a barrier against various viruses and decides on their "further passage". On September 14, general practitioner, PhD Alexey Khukhrev spoke about ways to strengthen the mucous membrane.

"Mucosa is not just something sticky to the touch. This is what the virus can get stuck in," Khukhrev shared in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».

The mucous membrane contains a large number of immunoglobulins that attach to viruses and make them immobile. The better the condition of the mucosa, the more difficult it is for the pathogen to penetrate into the tissues. The main problems for the mucous membrane are dry air and accumulation of secretions.

"At least everyone should have a humidifier in their bedroom," the doctor advised.

According to Khukhrev, another problem is the leakage of secretions from the sinuses into the nasopharynx, which causes irritation and drying of the mucous membrane. Another problem is that gastric juice can damage the mucous membrane, leading to its inflammation and dryness. All these factors make the body more vulnerable to viruses.

The expert clarified that rinsing the nose will solve both problems: it will moisten the mucous membrane and remove excess secretions. He recommended rinsing your nose once to twice a day, no more often.

Protein is also important for immunity, since immunoglobulins are proteins, so a full—fledged diet with animal and vegetable proteins is important.

"During the cold season, a person should consume at least 70 grams of protein per day," the doctor noted.

Khukhrev concluded that it is much easier to protect the mucous membrane than to fight an infection that has already begun to develop.

Allergist, immunologist Lyudmila Lapa told on September 12 how to distinguish acute respiratory viral infections from autumn allergies. She stressed that allergies and seasonal acute respiratory viral infections have different natures: the first is a reaction of the immune system to external stimuli such as mold or flowers, and the second is associated with infections and viruses.
