Rutte warned of risk for Madrid and London due to Russian missiles
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Russian missiles pose a danger not only to Tallinn or Vilnius, but also to London and Madrid. He announced this on September 12 during a joint press conference with the Commander-in-Chief of the alliance forces in Europe, Alex Grinkevich.
"I don't like this whole eastern flank concept because it gives the impression that I'm safer living in Madrid or London than in Tallinn. And that's not true," Rutte said.
The NATO Secretary General mentioned that the speed of the latest Russian missiles after launch will exceed the speed of sound by five times. Therefore, the rockets will be able to reach Madrid or London just five or 10 minutes later than Tallinn or Vilnius.
On October 12, Rutte announced the launch of the Eastern Sentinel initiative to strengthen the defense of NATO member countries. The operation will use elements aimed at solving special tasks related to the use of drones. He added that the initiatives will be conducted with the participation of many NATO allies, including Denmark, France, Great Britain and Germany.
