Syria strives to maintain and preserve close historical ties with Russia. This was announced on September 12 by the President of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) for the transitional period, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in an interview with Al Ikhbariya TV channel.

"Russia is an important country in the world and a member of the Security Council. There are close ties between Syria and Russia that we inherited. They must be preserved and developed calmly and carefully," he is quoted as saying in the Telegram channel.

Ahmed al-Sharaa noted that Syria has been able to build good relations with the United States and Western countries, as well as maintain calm relations with Russia and establish relations with the entire region.
