The doctor warned Russians about the risk of blindness due to the use of moonshine

Methanol, which can form in moonshine during fermentation, can lead to blindness and even death. This was announced on September 12 by Vladimir Neronov, gastroenterologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic).

According to him, dangerous substances can form in a drink even with careful preparation and compliance with the recipe. He noted that at home it is impossible to determine the exact amount of pure ethanol and toxic impurities contained in the product.

The doctor also clarified that the equipment used for distillation often does not comply with sanitary standards. According to the expert, it can be made of materials that emit harmful substances when heated.

"The worst thing is methanol, which can form during fermentation and is especially actively released during improper distillation," he said in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».

He added that methanol is a toxic substance that is converted into formaldehyde and formic acid in the body. These components damage cells, especially the nervous system and the eyes. As the doctor noted, "even 10 milliliters of methanol can lead to blindness, and 30 ml or more can be fatal." He also explained that the symptoms of methanol poisoning at first resemble ordinary intoxication: headache, nausea, weakness, but after a while severe damage to the brain and optic nerves may begin.

In addition, the doctor clarified that if any symptoms appear, you should immediately call an ambulance and inform the operator that moonshine was consumed.
