- The United States has proposed to the G7 countries to create a mechanism for the withdrawal of Russian assets
The United States suggests that the G7 countries create a legitimate "withdrawal mechanism" for frozen sovereign Russian assets and consider the possibility of withdrawing or using these assets to finance Ukraine's defense. This was reported by Bloomberg on September 12.
"The United States will also tell the G7 countries that they must create a legal path for the confiscation of immobilized sovereign Russian assets and consider the possibility of seizing or using these assets to finance Ukraine's defense," the material says.
According to Bloomberg, the vast majority of Russia's approximately $300 billion in frozen assets are located in Europe. The United States also proposes that the G7 impose broad sanctions against Russian energy sources.
In the final document of the EU summit, which was signed on March 20 by 26 of the 27 states of the community, it was reported that the EU would continue to hold frozen assets of Russia. It was noted that they should remain immobilized until the conflict ends.
On September 12, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia would respond with harsh measures to EU attempts to appropriate Russian assets. According to her, attempts at theft will not remain without consequences for everyone who participates in this crime.
Also on this day, Yevgeny Ustinov, Senior Adviser to the Permanent Mission of Russia to the United Nations (UN), said that the large-scale and uncontrolled application of sanctions by the West violates the principles of the United Nations and hinders the sovereign development of countries. Ustinov added that such sanctions have become a global problem, as the West uses them to achieve its own political goals.
