- The Russian Foreign Ministry spoke about the consequences for the West in the confiscation of Russian assets.
Russia will respond with harsh measures to attempts by the European Union (EU) to appropriate Russian assets. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, announced this at a briefing on September 12 and stressed that attempts at theft would not remain without consequences for everyone who would participate in this crime.
"It will not be in vain for those who will participate in such a crime. <...> We will react harshly to any unfriendly actions related to attempts to deprive Russia of ownership of its sovereign assets," TASS quoted her as saying.
The diplomat also warned that the consequences of the confiscation of Russian assets would have an extremely negative impact on the global economy. Zakharova noted that Western countries are seeking to develop a legal framework for the seizure of Russian assets. According to her, Russia is taking all necessary measures to protect the rights of its citizens and companies affected by the sanctions.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost warned on September 5 about the consequences of the confiscation of Russia's sovereign assets. According to him, the EU financial markets cannot avoid a "terrifying systemic shock" in the event of confiscation. Prevost also said that Belgium, where most of the frozen assets are located, does not want to bear the costs.
In the final document of the European Union (EU) summit, which was signed on March 20 by 26 of the 27 states of the community, it was reported that the EU would continue to hold frozen assets of Russia. It was noted that they should remain immobilized until the conflict ends.
