New Japanese sanctions against Russia and Belarus may negatively affect the economy of Japan itself. These measures are not in line with the interests of the country and may complicate the implementation of existing contracts. Igor Rastorguev, a leading analyst at AMarkets, told Izvestia on September 12.

"Firstly, special permits from the authorities will be needed to carry out transactions, which will increase the transaction time, and Japanese businesses risk falling under secondary sanctions from the United States and the EU. There is a high probability of a slowdown in the execution of current contracts in the context of improving turnover, which increased by 46.09% (yoy) in July," the expert said.

In addition, Rastorguev noted that in response to the sanctions, Russia may restrict the supply of a number of goods to Japan, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), purchases of which increased by 90% over the year. This, in turn, can significantly affect the country's energy security.

"In addition to the energy sector, trade in metallurgical, machine—building and chemical products is at risk, and Russia may miss the volume of medical products and rubber products, the supply of which increased by 27.8% and 132.7% over the year, respectively," the analyst concluded.

On the same day, the Japanese Ministry of Economy and Justice announced that the country was imposing sanctions against 52 organizations and 10 individuals from Russia, as well as three organizations from Belarus "in connection with the situation in Ukraine." The document notes that restrictions on payments and capital transactions are provided for these organizations. Special permission from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be required for their implementation.
