The Russian Defense Ministry announced the launch of the Zapad-2025 Russian-Belarusian military exercises

The joint strategic exercise of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation Zapad-2025 has started. This was announced on September 12 by the Russian Defense Ministry.

The ministry noted that this exercise is the final stage of the joint training of the armed forces of the two countries this year. Its goals are to improve the skills of commanders and staffs, the level of interaction and field training of regional and coalition groups of troops in solving joint tasks to preserve peace, protect interests and ensure military security.

During the training events, the military personnel plan to work out the management of interspecific, regional and coalition groups of troops in the localization of aggression against the Union State, various options for joint actions to neutralize threats and stabilize the situation on its borders.

At the first stage of the exercises, the issues of managing formations and military units in repelling aggression against the Union State, organizing interaction and all types of support in the interests of fulfilling their intended tasks will be worked out. The second stage will include the management of troops and forces while restoring the territorial integrity of the Union State.

Operational groups of military command bodies and military contingents of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and other partner states have also been invited to the exercise to practice joint actions as part of the coalition group of forces. It is specified that practical actions will take place at landfills and in the waters of the Baltic and Barents Seas.

On August 31, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus, First Deputy Minister of Defense, Major General Pavel Muraveyko, announced that planning for the use of nuclear weapons would be completed at the Zapad—2025 CSTO exercises.
