Micrognathia is an underdevelopment of the upper or lower jaw that can lead to serious problems with bite and tooth curvature. This pathology violates not only the location of the teeth, but also the symmetry of the face. Olga Zhuk, a general practitioner and CEO of the OrthoLike dental clinic, told Izvestia on September 12 how to deal with this.

Narrowing of the upper jaw, according to her, is most often manifested in childhood, and the problem needs to be solved as early as possible.

"There are quite a few causes of maxillary micrognathia. Of course, we can talk about genetic causes, heredity, but in fact the genetic aspect is not so pronounced here. The most common cause of pathology is external factors," explains Zhuk.

Narrowing of the jaw usually occurs during oral breathing, when a child has a constantly stuffy nose, a curvature of the nasal septum, or colds and allergic rhinitis often occur.

Bad habits, such as prolonged use of bottles and pacifiers or sucking fingers, can also lead to impaired development of the dental system.

"Parents often think that baby teeth are not important, they say, they will change soon anyway," the expert explains.

However, early loss of baby teeth can affect the proper development of permanent teeth, and a child should get used to regular visits to the dentist from an early age.

Nutrition is an equally important factor: when a child eats mashed potatoes for a long time, this can make it difficult for the jaw to develop normally. The doctor recommends introducing not only mashed potatoes into the baby's diet, but also small pieces of foods such as vegetables and fruits to stimulate chewing functions.

Narrowing of the upper jaw is not only a cosmetic problem. It can lead to a number of complications, such as crowding of teeth, malocclusion, breathing problems, as well as disorders with cerebral circulation due to insufficient oxygen supply. It also increases the load on the temporomandibular joint, which can cause clicks, crunching and pain when chewing. Diction defects and self—esteem problems are no less frequent consequences.

Diagnosis of micrognathia begins with an examination at the dentist, which may reveal symptoms such as deformity of the dentition, malocclusion or delayed teething. Computed tomography is used to clarify the diagnosis, and sometimes an MRI of the temporomandibular joint is prescribed.

"It is best to treat micrognathia at the age of 7-9 years, when the bone tissue is still actively developing. During this period, the narrowing of the jaw can be eliminated with the help of orthodontic systems, such as non-removable devices that are fixed on the upper jaw. Parents gradually unwind the structure, exerting active pressure on the bones of the upper jaw," explains the doctor.

It helps stimulate bone growth and dilate the nasal passages, improving breathing and preventing adenoid problems.

If micrognathia was not detected in childhood, its treatment in adulthood becomes more complex and lengthy. In such cases, braces are used or, in case of severe pathology, surgical intervention. However, prevention and timely treatment to the dentist in childhood can prevent the development of pathology.

To prevent the disease, the doctor recommends proper breastfeeding, the use of an anatomical nipple and its timely rejection, as well as the treatment of ENT diseases and caries of baby teeth. It is also important to engage in myogymnastics, exercises for the facial and masticatory muscles that help form the correct dentition.

On July 16, Olga Albova, a dentist at the Dentistoff clinic, named the cause of bleeding gums when brushing her teeth. As the expert explained, the main cause of bleeding is plaque, which accumulates pathogens.
