More than half (57%) Russian car owners have encountered technical problems after buying a used car. Among them are undeclared accidents during the sale, safety problems, non—compliance with technical specifications and twisted mileage. This was reported to Izvestia on September 11 by analysts of the Union of Automobile Dealers (SAD) based on the results of a survey.

According to the study, only a fifth of buyers did not have to invest extra money in the first year of operation of the purchased used car. More than half (56%) of used car buyers had to invest up to 20% of the transaction amount in the first year of operation. About 6% of buyers of used cars were unlucky — in the first year they had to invest from 70 to 100% of the original transaction amount in a new purchase.

When choosing a car, 77% of Russians immediately consider only options on the secondary market. Price remains the main criterion when buying (71%), while safety and technical condition of the vehicle occupy only fifth place among the respondents (41%). Half of Russians also look at the mileage (52%) and only a quarter (25%) pay attention to the originality of the PTS.

42% of the respondents noted that the technical characteristics of the car are important to them, but only 14% check whether the technical parameters indicated in the sales announcements really correspond to reality. Two thirds of the respondents (64%) admit that the fleet of used cars is becoming obsolete. Approximately half (54%) of the respondents are not sure that they are able to choose a decent car on their own right now.

Earlier, on September 9, it was reported that in August of this year, average prices for popular used cars in Russia decreased by 5.9% compared to the end of last summer. At the same time, individual brands and models show a more significant reduction in cost.

On August 28, it became known that the leader of the rating of the most popular crossovers in the Russian secondary market for the first seven months of 2025 is the Toyota RAV4, excluding the VAZ Niv in the SUV segment.
