Pediatrician, neonatologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic) Oksana Murzina dispelled popular myths about breastfeeding faced by young mothers. She reported this to Izvestia on September 12.

The first common misconception is that breastfeeding is always painful. Murzina explained that minor unpleasant sensations may occur in the early days, especially in first-time mothers, but constant pain is a signal of a possible problem. This may be due to improper attachment of the baby or abnormalities in breast health. In this case, according to the doctor, it is important to consult a specialist immediately.

The next myth is that if you don't start breastfeeding immediately after giving birth, it will be too late.

"Early application has its advantages: it helps to improve lactation, promotes uterine contractions and reduces the risk of bleeding. But if the start was delayed a little, this is not a reason to stop breastfeeding. The main thing is desire and support," the pediatrician noted.

In addition, Murzina said that the myth that a nursing mother should not take medication also has no scientific basis. Many medications can actually enter breast milk, but in minimal doses. Most common medications, for example, to reduce fever or for colds, are safe when breastfeeding. However, you should be careful with the use of herbs and dietary supplements because of the possible untestability of the composition. It is important to always consult a doctor before using any medication.

In addition, it is widely believed that if a mother is ill, she should stop feeding the baby. On the contrary, continued breastfeeding helps to transfer antibodies to the baby, which provide protection.

"The exceptions are serious infectious diseases, in which transmission of the virus with milk is possible," the specialist emphasized.

On September 11, Angelika Eremenko, a clinical psychologist at the Axon Mental Health Clinic, warned about the risks of postpartum depression for mother and child. She recommended seeking help from a psychiatrist for possible drug treatment and a clinical psychologist for therapy. According to her, this is the first and most important step in caring for the well-being and happy future of her child.
