Attempts to find the family of a baby killer whale stuck in a plastic ribbon off the coast of Kamchatka are hampered by weather conditions. Ekaterina Novikova, a lifeguard at the Delphi Dolphin Rescue Center, told Izvestia about this on September 10.

"For a week now, we have been looking for the family of Frodo, who is trapped in a plastic ring, and he will not be able to get out of it on his own. Unfortunately, they haven't seen this family for about two weeks. The search is also complicated by weather conditions, because of the waves it is very difficult to monitor from the water," she said.

Novikova added that this is the fourth time a group of rescuers has gone out into the ocean to search. They are assisted by ship captains who keep in touch with animal rights activists by radio.

Pictures of a newborn killer whale entangled in plastic tape, following its mother in the Avacha Bay of the Pacific Ocean, appeared online on July 7 and caused concern among environmentalists and volunteers. Despite the fact that the animal is active, scientists are convinced that it is unlikely to be able to get out of the packing ring without outside help.

Alexander Burdin, Doctor of Biological Sciences, a leading researcher at the Kamchatka branch of the Pacific Institute of Geography, noted that this is a very durable, practically non-decomposable tape. According to Tatiana Ivkovich, a biologist and head of FEROP scientific expeditions, the only sure way to help an animal is to try to free it from the noose in natural conditions, at sea.
