Trump announced the release of a Russian citizen by Hezbollah
On September 9, US President Donald Trump announced that Russian citizen Elizaveta Tsurkova had been released by Kataib Hezbollah.
"I am pleased to announce that Elizaveta Tsurkova, a Princeton student whose sister is a U.S. citizen, has just been released by the Kataib Hezbollah group," he said in a message on Truth Social.
In addition, Trump added that at the moment the Russian citizen is in the US Embassy in Iraq.
Later, Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani confirmed Tsurkova's release.
Tsurkova was abducted in Iraq by supporters of the Shiite militia from a house in the Karrada district of Baghdad on March 26, 2023.
In November 2023, the Al Rabiaa channel published a video message from Tsurkova with her confession of working for the special services of Israel and the United States. In the video, the hostage condemned Israel's actions against the Gaza Strip, and also stated that Israel was not taking any action to free her.
Al Rabiaa TV channel reported on May 24 that a Russian woman abducted in Iraq could be released as a result of a deal under which militants accused of attacking US bases would be released.
