At least 1.5 thousand prisoners escaped from Nepal's Nakhu prison in Lalitpur amid unrest in the country. This was reported on August 9 by the local newspaper Khabarhub.

"After the release of Rastriya Swatantra party chairman Rabi Lamichane, all prisoners of Nakhu prison in Lalitpur left the institution," the article says.

It is noted that at least 1.5 thousand people were held in prison at the time of the start of the riots in Nepal. According to the newspaper, the prisoners managed to escape, as the police left their posts.

"The authorities are monitoring the situation, as the mass release of prisoners poses a potential threat to public safety," the publication clarifies.

Mass protests in Nepal began on September 8 after the authorities decided to ban the activities of a number of major social networks that did not register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on time. Among other things, the protesters set fire to the central office of the ruling Nepali Congress party. As a result of the anti-government actions, 19 people were killed and about 500 were injured.

Nepal's prime minister resigned amid anti-government protests on September 9. President Ram Chandra Paudel accepted his resignation and began the process of selecting a new Prime Minister. Later, the president of the country himself decided to resign from his post.
