- The psychologist called the rejection of the sound of her voice a natural phenomenon.
Rejection of one's voice is a fairly common and natural phenomenon due to the peculiarities of sound perception. However, if this discomfort is accompanied by severe anxiety, self-loathing, or an unwillingness to communicate, it may be a sign of more serious problems. Olga Kushnareva, a psychologist and family therapist, told Izvestia about this on September 10.
"When a person hears himself on the record, he often wonders: "Is it really me?". The thing is, we hear our voice in different ways. At the moment of speech, we pick it up both through the air and through the vibration of the bones of the skull. This makes the voice lower and more pleasant for us. Only the aerial part remains in the recording, so it sounds higher and unusual," said the specialist.
Kushnareva noted that if rejection of one's voice causes severe anxiety or shame, this may indicate deeper problems, such as low self-esteem or negative experiences of criticism. The psychologist suggests several methods to overcome this condition.
"You can get used to your voice gradually: listen to yourself more often on the record, focus not on the sound, but on the content of speech. Breathing exercises, diction training, and even simple singing help well," she concluded.
On September 9, Maria Todorova, a child psychologist and correctional educator, told Izvestia about misophonia and its impact on people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). According to her, this is a form of sensory sensitivity in which certain sounds cause a person not just irritation, but a strong emotional reaction, such as anger, anxiety, or a desire to avoid contact. In international classifications of diseases, misophonia does not have the status of an independent disorder and is more often considered as a symptom of other diseases.
