Siluanov called on the Central Bank to lower the key rate and rates in the economy
To reduce the key rate of the Central Bank of Russia and economic rates, it is necessary to pursue a balanced budget policy. This was announced on September 9 by Finance Minister Anton Siluanov.
"We need to lower the key rate and rates in the economy, and for this we need to make a balanced budget," he said in an interview with RBC radio.
Siluanov stressed that the Central Bank is closely monitoring the budget deficit and its impact on monetary policy. The minister added that banks and the budget form the money supply, so reducing the budget deficit will create more opportunities for lending by commercial banks and ease monetary policy.
According to the Finance Minister, the current high rates are partly the result of increased budget momentum in previous years. He stressed that in the future it is important to avoid a repeat of this situation and keep the budget balanced.
"Now we must not repeat this situation. Therefore, the budget must be balanced. And this is a guarantee that we can hope for a softer monetary policy," he said.
In addition, Siluanov recalled that the Ministry of Finance always builds a budget based on "balanced and conservative approaches," so one should not focus on excessive optimism, in particular, on the possible easing of Western sanctions. According to the minister, the Russian Federation must first of all unconditionally fulfill its budget obligations.
On September 6, VTB Chairman of the Management Board Andrey Kostin announced a downward trend in the key interest rate in Russia. He stressed that now the movement of this indicator will only occur downwards, however, he clarified that the final decision is still made by the Central Bank of Russia.
Also, the head of Sberbank, German Gref, said that he expects a reduction in the key rate. According to him, the conditions for this process have already developed in Russia.
