Russian ethnologist and cultural and social anthropologist Svyatoslav Kaverin, who returned to Russia after being detained in Afghanistan for allegedly smuggling jewelry, told Izvestia on September 9 the details of his imprisonment.

The scientist stated that his car was stopped at a checkpoint in the city of Kunduz by security personnel who took away his phone, and during the search they found various jewelry and antique teapots. Kaverin noted that this was the reason for the accusation of smuggling.

In addition, he was suspected of espionage for asking political questions to the people of Afghanistan.

"They took me through three offices, two offices, they beat me somewhere, where they threatened. <...> There was not enough evidence, they tried to beat something out of me, but there was nothing to beat out <...> On the 30th day my investigation ended, on the 39th there was a trial, but I got out only on the 52nd," Kaverin said.

According to him, this is "arbitrariness and idiocy." In addition, as the scientist added, some of his belongings were stolen, including precious stones and various equipment.

The plane carrying the detained Russian took off for Moscow on September 8. Kaverin's mother Tatiana, in an interview with Izvestia, speaking about the expectation of her son, noted that he had been in Afghanistan for about two months. Earlier it was clarified that the purpose of the scientist's trip was to study the provinces of Kunar, Nuristan, Kapisa and Nangarhar.

Later, Kaverin posted a photo from the passport control area at Sheremetyevo Airport and thanked the caring people for their support. Izvestia reported on September 9 that the Russian met with family and friends in Aerogavan.
