- Merz urged European leaders to build relations with the United States without "false nostalgia"
The changing relationship between the European Union (EU) and the United States should be built without relying on a sense of "false nostalgia." This was announced on September 8 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
"We have to admit one fact: our relations with the United States are changing. The United States is also reviewing its interests — and has been doing so for some time. Therefore, we Europeans must also adjust our interests — without false nostalgia," he said during his speech at the opening of the annual conference of German ambassadors at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin.
According to the Chancellor, European states should not rely on Washington for their own security, even though it continues to be the EU's "most important partner."
Merz stressed that Europe is ready for close coordination and interaction with the American side, but is aware that this cooperation in the global sense is "less obvious," and its clear formation will take place only within the framework of "specific issues."
On September 4, the German edition of Bild learned about a tense telephone conversation between American President Donald Trump and European leaders over disagreements on anti-Russian sanctions. It was clarified that the EU intended to send its representatives to Washington in order to create a working group on this issue. The publication stressed that Trump's response to the relevant initiative remained unknown.
