Szijjarto accused Ukraine of worsening relations between Kiev and Budapest
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the deterioration of relations between Kiev and Budapest is the fault of Ukraine. He said this on September 8 at a press conference with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar in Budapest.
"In case of continued deterioration of relations between Hungary and Ukraine, the responsibility, of course, lies with Ukraine. It lies unambiguously and exclusively in Ukraine... The Ukrainian state constantly takes away the rights of the minority from the Carpathian Hungarians," Szijjarto said.
He also noted that the European Union (EU) is more concerned about the fate of "corrupt institutions of the Ukrainian state administration" rather than the fate of Hungarians in the Carpathian region.
On September 7, Zoltan Koshkovich, an expert at the Hungarian Center for Fundamental Rights, reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was ordering strikes on the Druzhba oil pipeline in order to put pressure on Hungary and change its position on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
On August 30, Szijjarto stated that Hungary continues not to support Ukraine's accession to the EU. He added that Budapest would not allow the opening of negotiations on Ukraine's European integration.
In addition, at a meeting of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council in Geneva on February 25, Szijjarto stated that Ukraine had violated the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia. He noted that this has been happening for the past 10 years, and Hungarians living in the region cannot, for example, use their native language in the fields of education, culture, press and public administration.
