From January to August 2025, Moscow recorded a decrease in the number of road accidents by 7.8% compared to the same period last year. The number of dead and injured decreased by 28.6% and 6.6%, respectively, the Moscow State Traffic Inspectorate reported on its Telegram channel on September 8.

In just eight days, 5,226 road accidents were registered in the city, in which 155 people were killed and 5,850 injured.

The most common types of road accidents in which people were killed and injured were vehicle collisions and pedestrian collisions.

The most common traffic violations among drivers in the capital are non-compliance with the distance, non-compliance with the speed of specific traffic conditions and non-compliance with the order of travel, the Traffic Police said.

Earlier, on September 5, it was reported that the Russian government finalized a draft law that describes a special mechanism for bringing to justice some traffic violators. The amendments are intended to eliminate double penalties for accidents.

Prior to that, on September 4, the State Traffic Inspectorate recalled that citizens and legal entities who, on the day of their admission to Russia, permanently resided in the territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, are required to replace registration documents and license plates with Russian ones by January 1, 2026.
