The political scientist assessed the likelihood of new US sanctions against Russia.
Even if the United States decides to impose new sanctions against Russia, they are likely to be symbolic. This was stated on September 8 by American political scientist Malek Dudakov in an interview with Izvestia.
This is how he commented on the readiness of US President Donald Trump for a new stage of imposing sanctions against Russia.
"I think it will be more of a symbolic story, which, in principle, probably won't affect our economy in any way. The United States may, of course, tighten sanctions pressure as a first step, but in this case, the very sectors of the American economy that are currently purchasing critically important categories of raw materials from our country will suffer," the expert said.
Dudakov also added that the new foreign policy realities depend on which group of influence in the White House makes decisions.
In addition, speaking about the possible tightening of sanctions, the expert drew attention to the fact that it should be borne in mind that the United States does not have many instruments of influence left, since previous attempts to impose secondary sanctions against China and India proved ineffective.
"They will just publicly express their dissatisfaction with the fact that right now, at the moment, it is not possible to achieve a cease-fire, and after that everyone will move on. That is, I don't think there will be any significant effect here. Given that many people in the Trump administration are not in the mood for a tougher confrontation with Russia, I would not rule out the possibility that we may not even see any new sanctions," the political scientist concluded.
Kevin Hassett, head of the National Economic Council at the White House, told CBS News on September 7 that the United States would soon discuss the possibility of introducing new sanctions against Russia. He added that the final decision will be made by the American leader.
