Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has announced his resignation from the post of chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

"I have decided to resign from the post of chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party," the politician said in Tokyo, as quoted by the Nikkei portal.

He also added that he would like the process of choosing a new party leader to begin as soon as possible.

Earlier, NHK announced Isiba's decision to resign from his post.

Earlier, on July 21, the ruling coalition of Japan, which includes the LDP and the Komeito party, lost the majority of seats in the elections in the upper house of parliament.

On July 22, President of the United States Donald Trump announced that the United States had concluded "perhaps the largest" trade deal with Japan, according to which Tokyo would invest $550 billion in Washington's economy and pay a 15% duty to the United States.

The Mainichi newspaper reported on July 23 that Isiba may decide to resign by the end of August, based on the outcome of negotiations with the United States. It was clarified that Isiba is facing great pressure from the LDP, which he leads, demanding his resignation after losing the elections to the upper house.
