Portugal named the cause of the funicular collapse in Lisbon
The collapse of the Elevator da Gloria funicular in Lisbon was probably caused by a cable break that connected the two cabins. On September 6, experts from the Portuguese Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aviation and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF) came to this conclusion.
"During the investigation of the wreckage at the crash site, it was immediately discovered that the cable connecting the two cabins broke off at the attachment point inside the upper part of cabin No. 1, which began its journey at the top of Calzada da Gloria," the Lusa agency quotes a fragment of the relevant report.
It is specified that the inspection did not reveal any damage in other parts and details of the funicular, including pulleys and a reversible flywheel.
The derailment of the famous funicular Elevator da Gloria became known on September 3. At that time, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. Hundreds of tourists and locals are transported by transport every day. The incident was not the first in history: in 2018, due to maintenance problems, it also derailed, but then there were no casualties.
The day after the tragedy, the authorities declared mourning. In addition, it is specified that the crews working at the crash site have been strengthened to eliminate the consequences.
