In Europe, Putin's words about Ukraine's possible accession to the EU were welcomed
European Commission (EC) spokeswoman Paula Pinho welcomed the statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the possibility for Ukraine to join the European Union (EU) in the future. This was announced on September 5 by the Euractiv portal.
"It is very welcome that President Putin sees Ukraine's place in the European Union," Pinho is quoted as saying in the publication.
She also said that the security guarantees for Kiev that the EU is considering do not necessarily imply the deployment of troops in Ukraine.
On September 5, Putin called Ukraine's desire to join the European Union a legitimate choice. According to the Russian leader, former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych saw a threat in opening Ukrainian markets to European goods. Putin noted that the then Ukrainian leader had to compare what losses the country was incurring in monetary and cooperative terms in contacts with Russia, and what it could gain from rapprochement with the EU.
