US President Donald Trump is considering launching attacks on alleged drug cartels in Venezuela as part of a strategy to weaken the republic's leader, Nicolas Maduro. This was reported on September 6 by CNN, citing sources.

"Trump is considering a variety of options for launching military strikes against drug cartels operating in Venezuela, including potentially hitting targets inside the country as part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening leader Maduro," the publication says.

It is noted that the earlier strike by the US forces on a ship allegedly transporting drugs from Venezuela is a direct reflection of such plans.

On August 28, it was reported that the United States had sent at least seven ships and a nuclear submarine with ballistic missiles to the shores of Venezuela. Tensions between the two countries have increased. It was also noted that most of the ships are equipped with Tomahawk missiles that can hit ground targets.

On September 2, it became known that the US military had destroyed a ship allegedly carrying drugs from Venezuela. It was noted that the Pentagon had to study the details of the incident. Later, Trump said that 11 people died as a result of the strike on the ship.
