Malefactors most often steal documents and data of deceased people and use them to issue SIM cards and eSIM, lawyer and managing partner of AVG Legal Alexey Gavrishev told Izvestia.

They need the "gray" numbers to anonymize calls, register in messengers and on marketplaces," the expert explained.

The deceased's documents are also used for transactions with electronic wallets and banking products, and for issuing microloans.

"They also continue to receive social benefits (pensions, allowances) for deceased people and make one—time payments," the specialist added.

To steal data, criminals attempt to remotely access services (personal accounts, acquiring) before blocking the account, the lawyer added.

Earlier, it became known about the conviction against the group that issued SIM cards and eSIM for deceased people. The Butyrsky court of the capital sentenced the accomplices, depending on the role of each, to imprisonment in a penal colony for terms from 6 to 14 years and heavy fines.
