On Friday and the first weekend of September, traffic police officers will conduct massive and continuous checks on the country's roads, special attention will be paid to the search for drunk drivers. The raids were announced on September 5 by the regional departments of the State Traffic Inspectorate.

Raids on drunk motorists will take place in Kaluga, Tver, Ryazan, Kirov, Ivanovo regions, the Republic of Bashkortostan, the Komi Republic and other regions of Russia.

On the eve of the weekend, the State Traffic Inspectorate reminded drivers about the inadmissibility of driving under the influence of alcohol. Mass inspections on Russian roads to identify motorists who have got behind the wheel in a state of intoxication are carried out by traffic police on an ongoing basis.

"When you see that a drunk person gets behind the wheel, behaves inappropriately, creates dangerous situations on the road, do not remain indifferent — report this to the police. Employees of the State Traffic Inspectorate will definitely take all necessary measures to respond to such reports," said Police Colonel Anton Belan, Deputy head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

He stressed that driving drunk endangers the life of not only the driver himself, who got behind the wheel after drinking alcohol, but also his passengers, as well as other road users.

The traffic police also stressed that driving under the influence of alcohol and refusing a medical examination entail the deprivation of a driver's license for a period of one and a half to two years and a heavy fine. In addition, in some cases, the driver faces criminal liability for these acts, the department emphasizes.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Russian government finalized a draft law that describes a special mechanism for bringing to justice some traffic violators. The amendments are intended to eliminate double penalties for accidents.
