Russia demands that Tokyo recognize the results of World War II and its responsibility for unleashing the conflict in full. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Lavrov's welcoming address to the organizers and participants of the solemn meeting on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II.

"We strongly urge the Japanese authorities to fully recognize the international legal consequences of the Victory of the allied states, as well as their share of responsibility for unleashing a global conflict," Lavrov said in a statement posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website.

The head of the department added that, together with like-minded countries, Russia will continue its diverse educational and war memorial activities aimed at identifying new evidence of official Tokyo's crimes in the 1930s and 40s.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on August 11 that Japan, continuing to talk about the ownership of the Kuril Islands by the Russian Federation, refuses to recognize the results of the post-war settlement. According to her, Japan is not able to change the reality that the Kuril Islands are part of Russia after the transition to the USSR legally under the post-war agreements of the allied powers and the Charter of the United Nations (UN).
