- NBC has learned about the US plans to lead the monitoring of a possible buffer zone in Ukraine
The United States is considering taking on the role of a leading observer of a potential buffer zone between Russia and Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement. This was reported on September 5 by NBC News, citing sources.
"If a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine is ever concluded, the United States may take a leading role in monitoring the large buffer zone inside Ukraine," the publication says.
According to the TV channel, the United States plans to use satellites, drones and other intelligence tools to monitor the situation. At the same time, the protection of this territory may be assigned to military personnel from non-NATO countries, such as Saudi Arabia or Bangladesh. At the same time, according to NBC News sources, American troops will not be deployed in Ukraine.
Earlier, on August 29, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the idea of creating a buffer zone in the country. According to him, it has actually already been formed as a result of the use of drones.
The day before, Politico newspaper indicated that European leaders were discussing the possibility of creating a 40-kilometer buffer zone in Ukraine as part of efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully. Commenting on the situation, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense James Townsend said that such steps look like "grasping at straws."
